The original church dates back to 1868, built for the cost of $3000. The congregation continued to grow, until the beautiful Gothic Revival church we see today was built 23 years later (completed in 1890). The school building followed in 1905. The school was served by the Sisters of Charity, the order started by St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, who started the Catholic school system in the U.S.

The parish was founded in 1907, during the accelerated growth of Catholics in NYC. The first services were held in an old stable, but soon moved into a four story building to include a school. The school was run by the Sisters of Charity.
As an interesting fact, baseball legend Babe Ruth was married in the rectory in 1929.

In 1990, the Franciscans of Holy Name Province began administering the parish. They opened the Franciscan Community Center, following their directive to serve the needs of the community - beyond the parish to the whole neighborhood.
In 2015, the parishes of Holy Name of Jesus and St. Gregory the Great merged into a new combined parish, and the church of Saint Gregory the Great was deconsecrated and closed in 2017. Three years later in 2020, the parish transitioned back to the Archdiocese of NY.
